Recast this bird.
I’ve been thinking a lot about bald eagles lately. And as it happens, there’s one that hangs our next door to the cabin I’m staying in on Vashon Island, near Seattle.
To be honest I’m not sure what type of bird would be a better representation of the America I want to be a citizen of, but the bald eagle just doesn’t sit well with me. But neither does a dove. …Some sort of long range bird. That isn’t bald and angry looking…
When I took this photo there were two crows harassing this guy by cawing loudly and swooping around. Apparently bald eagles eats crow eggs. There’s definitely a metaphor in there somewhere, I know it.
I love this country. Or rather I want to love what this country can represent. I want to be a part of making this country better, in however small a way. And that’s not blind national pride, it’s the fact that wherever I am, I want to exist more wholly in the space, and with the people around me. To add not detract. And I think the point I’m trying to make, is that this bird looks to be all about detraction…
And I know this post kind of wandered into serious land, but I keep thinking it’d be hilarious to hold auditions for the new national bird. I keep imagining talking pelicans, swans, geese, hawks, pigeons, etc. Each giving us their pitch.
Ok, back to my day. This West Coast time has me confused. xo
